My book is a work of fiction, definitely written with adults in mind, and soon to be ready for viewing, but I have no idea how or where to start to get published.

I had the same question before. I contacted Houghtin Miflin by email and they told me to send a draft to another email that takes book ideas. Just look at the publisher of your choice webpage and contact them.

I would get the Writers handbook to see what publishers may be interested in you unsolicited manuscript

If you're looking to have your book published in the traditional manner, your best first step would be to pick up WRITER'S MARKET 2008. It is big, and not cheap, but the absolute best source of information for anyone looking to become a published author and wanting a place to start. There are many different ways to go about getting published, and you'll get tons of advice from this forum - some good and some horribly bad. Everyone will give you advice, but most of it will be based on his/her own experience, biased and not necessarily applicable to everyone. Start with WRITER'S MARKET and then any specific questions you have you might want to bring here.

First step that I would advise would be to get the book copyrighted immediately, print the forms at the following website address, and find the info on how much money you'll need to send (about $30). Protecting your work should be of the utmost importance. I would also suggest finding an editor before you start sending out to publishers, preferably a seasoned author or a professional editor. Just to polish your manuscript before it gets seen by publishers, who will overlook it if they don't like what they see (typos and the like), and if it's not formatted according the their specifications. So get it copyrighted, find at least a decent editor, and then look up the market books already suggested. I know a great publisher so when you have it copyrighted, email me and I'll see what I can do for you.
