If you are referring to transferring video from your miniDV tape based camcorder to your computer using firewire:

Your computer needs a firewire port. If it does not have one, they are typically easy to add (and they are relatively cheap).

If you have an Apple Macintosh, then it probably already has a firewire port - they have been included in Macs for 6-7 years. The only Mac without a firewire port is the new Mac Air.

    The camcorder should be off.

Connect your camera to the AC adapter and plug that into a working AC power outlet.

Connect one side of the firewire cable to the DV port of the camcorder.

Connect the other side of the firewire cable to the firewire port on the computer.

Start up the computer if it is not already on - and at a stable desktop.

Quit out of any application that might be running that you are not using. This is optional, but be aware that video uses lots of memory so making room for video editing by quitting applications you are not using is going to help.

Power up the camcorder - and put it in "Play" mode.

In Windows, launch MovieMaker. When it is ready, you will "Capture" the video...

In MacOSX, launch iMovieHD. Select the camera/video type - with your camcorder, "DV" is the best option. Name the project. When you get to the iMovieHD project page, you will "Import" the video.

You may need to rewind the video. You can use either the camcorder control or the controls on the screen. Do this before importing/capturing.

When importing/capturing is complete, SAVE your work.

This is not the place to provide you a tutorial on how to use these video editors.
